Slow WiFi?
Free Fixes to Try First

← Back to the blog

Before you call your internet company or buy new gear, try these simple steps. Most slow-WiFi problems at home come down to a handful of easy things you can fix yourself in just a few minutes — no tech skills needed.

1. Restart your router (the classic fix)

It sounds too easy, but it works more often than anything else. Unplug your router (the box that broadcasts your WiFi) and your modem if it's separate, wait a full 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Give it a couple of minutes to fully start up. This clears out little glitches that build up over time.

2. Move the router to a better spot

WiFi signal fades through walls, floors, and furniture. For the best coverage:

  • Put it out in the open — not in a closet, cabinet, or behind the TV.
  • Higher is better, like on a shelf rather than the floor.
  • Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones, and big metal objects.
  • Aim for a central spot in your home, not a far corner.

3. Get a little closer (or pick the right network)

The farther you are from the router, the slower it gets. If your network shows up twice (often ending in "2.4" and "5"), here's the simple rule: the 5 one is faster but works best up close; the 2.4 one is slower but reaches farther. Try whichever works better in the room you're in.

4. See what's hogging the internet

If everyone's streaming, gaming, and downloading at once, things slow down for everyone. Pause big downloads or 4K streams when you need a fast connection, and disconnect old devices you're not using.

5. Restart your phone or computer too

Sometimes it's not the WiFi — it's the device. A quick restart of your phone, tablet, or computer often clears up a sluggish connection.

Still have dead spots or slow speeds after all that? That's usually a sign your home needs better coverage (like a mesh system or an extender) or a quick network check. That's exactly what we do — and we'll come to you.
